April 1, UAB Materials Science and Engineering students competed against schools from across the nation in a cupola competition. Teams of competitors used a self-constructed 10 inch diameter cupola - a vertical, cylindrical furnace used to melt metal - and attempted to melt enough iron to fill a common mold.
