The Birmingham News is reporting that UAB coaching legend Gene Bartow is scheduled to be treated for stomach cancer at the Kirklin Clinic tomorrow.

The 78-year-old Bartow left UCLA after the 1977 season for a start-up, Division I basketball program on the Southside. His first team went 15-11 and his second team made it to the NIT. By the third year he had the Blazers in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament and in the fourth year UAB played for a Final Four berth.
Bartow Arena, where UAB plays home games, is named after the man who coached for 13 seasons and served as the school’s longtime athletics director.
We wish Gene and his family all the best during his treatment.
Blazer fans rejoice! UAB will has once again been invited to the National Invitation Tournament basketball tournament and will face Notre Dame Tuesday night live on ESPN2. The game starts at 8 PM Central and will take place in NYC.
The invitation marks the Blazers 10th appearence in the NIT, and the 23rd overall postseason appearance for the team. While the NCAA tournament would have been great, we can at least cheer for the green and gold Tuesday night. We’ll take the “Little Dance” over nothing. Look for more in this week’s Kaleidoscope and on Inside UAB.
